Prothem

Prothem is the first and only private tea factory in Burundi

Sector: Tea processing

In portfolio since: 2012

Location: Burundi

Prothem is the first and only private tea factory in Burundi and competes with the five (5) existing government owned and operated factories. The participation of Prothem in the Burundi tea value chain has resulted in increased farmer GL payments from BIF 140 to BIF 230 per kg of GL. Other innovative initiatives under consideration include automation of GL purchases and cashless payment to farmers.

Besides the increased income which is enjoyed by all tea SMF in Burundi, and not just Prothem suppliers, Prothem employees 80 permanent employees and between 200 and 300 casual workers depending on seasonality. In addition, the company’s growing direct sales channels and envisioned Rainforest Alliance (RFA) certification will positively impact on its revenues, whose additional margin will be shared with the farmers. Prothem has a good relationship with the Government of Burundi and continually participates in forums aimed at strengthening the county’s tea value chain.
