Impact Spotlight | Moringa School: Tinah Ngei's Journey into Data Science

At DOB Equity, we believe the true measure of impact lies in the lives behind the numbers. In this edition of our Impact Spotlight series, we speak with Moringa School alumna Tinah Ngei about her journey from business development into data science, and how access to practical, industry-relevant education opened the door to new opportunities.

Tell us a little about yourself.

My name is Tinah Ngei, and my background is in finance, business development and customer service. I've always been passionate about innovation, entrepreneurship and helping businesses grow. Alongside my professional career, I also manage Yaretzi Beauty Parlour, which has given me first-hand experience building and running a business. Throughout my career, I've always enjoyed finding ways to help businesses grow through strategy, relationships and innovation.

What led you to Moringa School?

Before joining Moringa School, I was working in business development and managing operations within the beauty industry. At the same time, I found myself increasingly drawn to technology and wanted to strengthen my digital and analytical skills.

One of my biggest challenges was figuring out how to transition into a fast-growing tech industry without a traditional technology background. I wanted to build skills that would create more opportunities for my career and business.

What made you choose Moringa School?

I first heard about Moringa School through online research and recommendations from alumni and others working in technology.

I was looking for a learning environment that was practical, industry-focused and supportive. Moringa stood out because of its strong reputation for helping students build real-world skills and preparing them for the job market.

Was making the switch into technology intimidating?

Yes, definitely.

Since my background was mainly in finance and business, I wondered whether I would adapt well to technical learning. It was a completely different field, but I decided to challenge myself and embrace the opportunity to grow. Looking back, I'm grateful I took that step.

How would you describe your experience at Moringa School?

It was both challenging and rewarding.

The programme pushed me to think critically, solve problems and become more confident in learning new technologies and AI. What had the biggest impact on me were the hands-on projects and collaborative learning environment. They allowed me to apply concepts in practice instead of simply learning theory.

Beyond the technical skills, what did you gain from the experience?

I developed discipline, resilience, confidence and a growth mindset. I also strengthened my communication, teamwork and problem-solving skills. Those are qualities I continue to use every day.

The mentorship and support from the instructors also made a lasting impression. There were moments during projects when I realized I was capable of learning and building things I once thought were beyond my abilities.

Where has that journey taken you today?

Today, I'm continuing my journey in Data Science while also drawing on my experience in business development and entrepreneurship. Moringa helped me develop technical skills, analytical thinking and adaptability, but perhaps even more importantly, it gave me the confidence to pursue opportunities that I previously thought were out of reach.

I now see technology as a powerful tool for innovation and business transformation.

Looking back, what does this journey mean to you?

For me, this journey represents growth, resilience and transformation.

It reminded me that it's never too late to learn something new or pursue a different path. Taking that leap has changed how I see both myself and what's possible for my future.

Finally, what would you say to someone considering joining Moringa School?

I would encourage them to stay open-minded, committed and ready to learn. The journey may be challenging, but the growth and opportunities that come from it are worth it.

Tinah's journey is one example of a broader impact that Moringa School continues to see across its alumni.

Reflecting on this, Cyrus Kirui, Graduate Support at Moringa School, shared:

"One of the most encouraging things we continue to see is alumni applying their skills to create meaningful impact across different industries and communities. Stories like Tinah's demonstrate how access to quality tech education can open doors to new opportunities, career growth and innovation. Beyond individual success, our graduates continue to contribute to the broader technology ecosystem by solving real-world challenges, supporting digital transformation and inspiring other aspiring professionals to pursue careers in technology."

Stories like Tinah's illustrate how access to practical, industry-relevant education can unlock new opportunities for individuals while strengthening the broader technology ecosystem; a reminder that impact is ultimately about people, their ambition, resilience, and the opportunities that enable them to grow.

As technology reshapes industries across Africa, learners from diverse professional backgrounds are acquiring new skills, unlocking career opportunities and applying their knowledge to solve real-world challenges.
