With 1.3 billion tons of annual global waste production, demographic challenges and a high level of urbanization, the need for waste management solutions is becoming more and more opportune.

Zanrec AB is a social venture that is involved in professional waste management collection services for the hospitality sector in Zanzibar, including awareness programs for local communities. In 2017, Zanrec collected 3,000+ ton waste, of which 58% is organic, 5% is plastics, 2% are metals and the remaining 35% other non-organic waste. Zanrec owns a collection site in the north east region of Zanzibar which has non-operational composting infrastructure and a bailing machine. 

DOB’s strategy is to adopt an inside-out approach; starting by learning how local waste value chains function and then using the insights as a foundation to create a disruptive ‘waste management platform’. The aim is to invest along the value chain, starting with collection, but with future focus on waste solutions, i.e. waste reduction and recycling.
